TRIESTE, THE UNITED STATES, AND THE 4th OF JULY

Trieste, 4 July 2026. – Like every year, on the 4th of July the United States of America celebrates Independence Day, the national holiday commemorating its independence which 250 years ago changed the course of world history.

It is the anniversary of the founding document of the U.S.A., the unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, approved by the Continental Congress on the 4th of July 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This document was the true beginning of the American Revolution, of the war for independence from the British Crown, which ended seven years later, in 1783, with the decisive victory of George Washington’s Continental Army on the British forces.

The next great step was the extraordinary monument to liberal democracy that is the Constitution of the United States of America.

Written by the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, it was promulgated in 1788 and has been in force since 4 March 1789, with 17 later amendments.

Eight years later, in 1797, George Washington opened in the Austrian city and free port of Trieste the second US Consulate in Europe.

Today the United States comprise 50 federal States and the District of Columbia (Washington D.C.), as well as the territories associated with the Federal Government: the freely associated State of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, and the Pacific territories of American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam.

The international role of the U.S.

The international role of the United States of America as a defender of liberal democracy against totalitarian regimes also emerged from the moral and political principles of a Constitution like no other in the world.

A role that proved necessary and decisive to save Europe and the world from the domination of Nazi Germany and their allies, and then from Soviet communism.

With the Second World War, however, the US had  to face also the consequences of the opportunism of the Western countries that had allowed Hitler’s regime to prosper until it was too late to stop it.

This problem is taking place again, with the opportunism of far too many Western countries towards the two most oppressive and dangerous totalitarian regimes of the present world: China’s communist regime and Iran’s terrorist regime.

The strategies of the Trump Administration.

This year’s Independence Day will be celebrated by the second Trump Administration, with which the US is finally facing the global threat posed by the aforementioned two totalitarian regimes, before it’s too late.

The strategy of the Trump Administration consists of agreements aimed at resolving tensions and wars that benefit China and Iran, and where necessary, the exercise of U.S. military deterrence and intervention.

In the Middle East, this strategy consists of the Abraham Accords [LINK] and war against terrorist organizations, pursued together with the State of Israel, which must fight for its own survival.

The first Trump Administration, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, had initiated the Abraham Accords and stopped the anti-Israeli terrorist groups and Ukrainian nationalists with funding cuts.

Funding was then resumed by the Biden Administration, with disastrous consequences.

The pragmatism and success of the political and strategic effort of the two Trump Administrations, however, both disturb and threaten the interests of lots of opportunistic politicians and Western countries with communist China and with terrorist organizations in the Middle East.

An unprecedented, aggressive propaganda campaign.

Indeed, it is the same politicians and Western countries that unleashed an unprecedented propaganda campaign against President Trump and against Israel.

Never before a President of the United States was targeted with such relentless and violent campaigns of defamation and disinformation.

Never before a campaign of delegitimization and hatred so great was fueled against a President of the United States, to the point of leading to repeated assassination attempts against him.

And never before the West spread shameless antisemitism to a degree not seen since the Nazi era, or criminalized Israel for being forced to defend itself.

At the same time, few could have expected that the same European countries would favor and fuel a war between Ukraine and Russia, which only benefits China, as it isolates Russia from the West.

Indeed, those European countries are not helping Ukraine, they have been exploiting it for five years to prolong, in their own interest, a massacre between two European peoples, the Russians and the Ukrainians, and to maintain the Ukrainians under a military dictatorship without new elections.

And very few could have imagined that they would support that war with such extreme and irrational racism as to discriminate even against the great Russian writers and musicians of the past.

Those are the same European countries that now accuse President Trump of attacking the Iranian terrorist regime for no reason, and with no results.

Despite being fully aware that the attack was necessary, because the Iranian terrorist regime was about to complete, in just a few weeks, its first atomic bomb. And the US intervention prevented it.

Because of this, it should be evident that the United States of America is once again defending liberty and democracy in the world, including against the irresponsible opportunism of far too many other Western countries, which in turn fuel ideological, left wing and right-wing anti-Americanism.

As it is evident that in Europe the political climate on the matter is so authoritarian that barely anyone dares speak inconvenient truths.

On the contrary, on nearly all European and Italian mass-media, propaganda and disinformation against the United States (and Israel) continue to grow, showing an astonishing level of political conformism.

A bond and a special debt of loyalty.

In Trieste however we have a bond and a special debt of loyalty and truthfulness towards the United States and the Governments of the United States, because since 1947 they have been the primary Administrators of the Free Territory of Trieste, established under the Treaty of Peace of the Second World War, which today borders Italy and Slovenia (LINK).

Allow us, therefore, to wish from Trieste a joyful 2026 Independence Day to all the people of good will, in the United States and worldwide, with some historical reflections that may be useful to overcome the most absurd and widespread anti-American prejudice.

The revolution of liberal democracy.

Analysis by Silvia Verdoljak

Since the early seventeenth century, European settlers in North America were individuals, families, and communities fleeing Europe to survive political and religious oppression and persecution.

For this reason, those men and women held the pursuit and exercise of liberty, together with faith in God, as their highest values.

And so, when oppression reached their new world from Europe, they rebelled against it with extraordinary courage, determination, and consistency.

The thirteen American colonies rebelled when the British sovereign, to whom they were required to pay increasing taxes, decided to abolish their representative assemblies.

This is how, in 1776, “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence” the Declaration of Independence was approved, establishing the principles of the American Revolution, which continued on the battlefield until victory, in 1783.

We invite you to read the Declaration firsthand to fully appreciate it: LINK.

The American Revolution was a fierce and extraordinarily difficult political and military struggle against the British crown, however, it never sank into extremism, and it didn’t take an authoritarian turn.

Because its protagonists maintained a balanced outlook on rebellion, not as a self-serving act or a destructive political outburst; rather, as the necessary instrument to build a democratic and liberal state, founded on the concept of common good and on the recognition that every person has the right to pursue happiness and to rebel even against abuses committed by their own Government.

And it is this framework of true liberty and democracy that has been embodied in the Constitution of the United States of America since 1789.

To understand some fundamental differences between the United States and the Old Europe, then and now, it is worth drawing a comparison with the European myth of the French Revolution, which took place soon after (1789-1799).

That Revolution was the opposite of the one that took place in America, because the French revolutionaries attempted to get rid of faith in God with political cults and persecuting religious orders, they declared the King an outlaw, murdered the royal family, and unleashed unprecedented massacres and violence.

And it ended in two authoritarian paradoxes: the appointment of an Emperor, who launched his armies against the peoples of half the world, and then the restoration of the overthrown Monarchy.

By contrast, the model of democracy and liberty on which, 250 years ago, the United States of America was founded was not a final destination, rather, it was the beginning of an effort to build a better world, and a balanced political system, capable of renewing itself by recognizing and overcoming its own flaws and mistakes.

An effort that is a moral responsibility not only of governments, but also of every individual and every community committed to the common good.

This is in no way a small responsibility, considering that right now the people under a totalitarian regime are between 70% and 75% of humankind, in other words, 5.8 to 6 billion human beings.

Furthermore, those regimes are not easy adversaries, from communist China to the self-proclaimed theocratic regimes of Iran and Afghanistan, or ordinary dictatorships.

And this means that the democratic, liberal revolution initiated in 1776 by the United States must also continue through accurate information and individual courage, in an increasingly interconnected world, and “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence”.
